A Big Announcement

From the moment you get pregnant and realize that a family – your very own made-from-scratch family – is on the horizon, your thoughts shift. People will ask you what’s to come for your growing family, and as much as you resent their intrusiveness, you start to wonder if there will ever be more.

Once you get through those horrific, non-sleeping first months, your mind begins to meander. You can do this. You can make something again.

And you start to plan. The plan is good. Even though you don’t have a lot of money and don’t know how you are going to afford the baby you already have, you know that since you want this one thing enough, you will be able to make it happen because that’s what families do.

All of a sudden, that special, wonderful thing you had been planning and working so hard to create just EXISTS. Although your partner assisted you in creating that one special thing, you know that it was all you who brought it to its fruition. Your motherhood is engorged and you are elated.

So, without further ado, a major announcement:

Wee Cee is going to be an owl for Halloween.

And I made her costume myself:

Here’s the back:

And one more:

What? What did you think I was going to announce?

Happy Halloween!

PS, Feel free to Pin the crap out of this post! ;D

Thank God. One is enough for now!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I’m convinced we have kids for the sole purpose of dressing them up.

  2. sj's avatar

    So. Freaking. Cute.

I’m working on making the costumes for the 5 and 6 year old STILL. 13y/o is taller than most adults, so won’t pass for young enough to trick or treat in our town. [sigh]

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Well, if all else fails, just put a sheet over them and tell them they’re ghosts. When my BFF’s little brother was five, he just put on a suit for Halloween and went as a member of the IRS audit team.

      1. sj's avatar

No, the costumes are mostly done, I’m just trying to figure out how to make the stupid helmets.

  3. Rutabaga the Mercenary Researcher's avatar

    That’s awesome…and doesn’t induce vomiting for up to 9 months…

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I know, making a costume is so much easier and cheaper than making a human.

  4. El Guapo's avatar

“When the costume maker is ready, the child appears” – a mangled quote.

    Nice job – looks great!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I like the quote, mangled as it is! Thanks, Guap.

  5. Ashley Austrew's avatar

That is adorable! I thought about doing something similar for Sonia, but then didn’t because I am lazy. I guess I still have a few days to throw something together… lol

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks! You still have time! I’m 100% sure that whatever she goes as, she will be amazingly cute.

  6. She's a Maineiac's avatar

Well done! I didn’t think the cute factor could get any greater until I kept scrolling down to see the last photo. AW!!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks! Tiny gourds tend to make things 100% cuter.

      1. She's a Maineiac's avatar

that and she’s just beyond sweet and adorable! I miss those days…..(not that my kids aren’t still adorable, just that I can’t dress them up in owl costumes anymore)

  7. sidney's avatar

Now that I’ve recovered from a case of the vapors…..I’ll try to comment….. Wee Cee is the absolute cutest little ” HOOT ” I have ever seen !

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Don’t you worry….I would tell you ahead of time and not leave you to find out on my blog if C ever gets a sibling ;D

  8. mockingbirddontwrite's avatar

Bitch. You got talent for days. This is fantastic. I really need to start making my own costumes. Also, YOU NEED YOU A SEWING MACHINE LIKE YESTERDAY.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I know, right?! I think I am going to get in trouble for this post. Maybe it’s more of the April Fools category. Thanks, though. It took me forever and a day to make it but I think it turned out really well!

      1. mockingbirddontwrite's avatar

It turned out amazing. And when I said “Bitch”, it was more of a, “THIS BITCH RIGHT HERE IS AMAZING” kind of bitch. Not an actual derogatory “bitch”. Although, it’s kinda hard to tell with that word. It can go so many different ways.

        1. The Waiting's avatar

Haha I took it as a complement.

Oh and have you seen the “Bitch please I’m from 901” meme? SO FUNNY.

  9. jmlindy422's avatar

That is so freaking cute, it almost made me forget the ticked off post I’m planning for today. Almost. Might lose a few readers, but I’ve got Miss C’s awesome owl costume to cheer me up.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Oooh, now I’m excited to read your rant! You have my permission to put some cute kittah pictures in the post too just in case ;D

Emily…yer baby is ADORABLE…I want to eat her up!!! Super cute owl costume…wow. Were you sideways telling us you are having another baby? I can’t tell…

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Awww, thanks. I should clarify, I am very, VERY without child. Thank God. One is enough for now. Thanks, Speedo!

      1. judy's avatar

        hahaha!!! Congrats then!! hahahahaha

  11. Lily's avatar

I don’t get how you have time to do all these sweet things, be a cool mom and make owl costumes. I can barely feed myself never mind make a costume. Miss C is the cutest as per usual.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Well, to be fair, I have been working on this costume since August, otherwise I would have NEVER gotten it done. And B helped a little bit too. Thanks, Lil!

  12. Brigitte's avatar

Awwwwwww. I am smiling — she is beautiful and sweet. Loved her Halloween costume, Em. You’re very talented.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks, Brig! Halloween is so much more fun this year with her! Mostly because we can eat all her candy ;D

  13. Anonymous Good Person's avatar

you absolutely kill me and i LOVE that costume.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks, Moms. I think it turned out quite well, the prank AND the costume!

      1. Anonymous Good Person's avatar

        i’d agree…

  14. harperfaulkner's avatar

I love this! Thanks for reminding me there are still sweet blogs in this blogasphere! HF

My pleasure! I like to keep it nice and PG. This is a “family” blog. Thanks, Harper.

  15. Willow Feller's avatar

Oh, Emily, you so, SO had me going! I totally did not see it coming. As someone who had a bad/good habit of getting pregnant with one while still nursing another (and no, ahem, I was not one of those um, interesting, moms who breastfeed their school age children) I took the bait. Oh, but how the pics have redeemed you! How can I stay mad at you for pulling one over on me when you made me laugh and giggle and ooh and ah over your unspeakably cute little owl?? My heart is warmed. (And my womb is cold. Thank God.) Okay, that was weird, I know. But I’m just so, so grateful to never have to be pregnant again…

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Hi Willow! I totally cannot imagine having another baby right now. Those ladies who can do it have got to be super human. C has slept through the night since she was 7 weeks old and now, all of a sudden, she is having a really hard time doing this, so the idea of being up with her AND being nauseous with another one makes me weep inside. Here’s to not being pregnant!

  16. melissa.scholes.young's avatar

Oh, you got costume making SKILLZ. I can’t even sew on a button. Or at least I won’t. Love the owl. Love Baby C. Was hoping she’d have a sibling soon but I get it. I really do.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Haha! Maybe someday, but no time soon. You can be sure of that. BTW, it’s all about fabric glue. Very, very little sewing was involved ;D

You are sneaky. Sneakier than an owl. Are owls sneaky? I’d like to think so. The baby is kind of cute too.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Owls I think are sneaky. Or wise? Probably both. You’re right, she’s sort of cute, I guess. ;)

  20. Love and Lunchmeat's avatar

Adorable! You have mad skillz (also skillz in the suspense department). My kids are going as a cop, a jailbird, and a giraffe. I’m lazy though, so it’s all store-bought. (I usually get them during the post Halloween sales.) My daughter really wants to be a princess… but let’s face it. She’s basically a princess every day.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I love the combo of a cop, a jailbird, and a giraffe! Totally makes me think of the old “one of these things is not like the other” bit. If I had more than one kid, I probably wouldn’t be making her costume. I think I’m going to Target on Thursday to buy her costume for next year on clearance. I would have done that last year but then we had no idea if she was going to be a boy or a girl.

  21. Storkhunter's avatar

Now that is the darnedest perfectest bird I’ve ever seen. And this coming from a stork hunter

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Wow! That’s quite a compliment, coming from you! Thanks!

  22. Carrie's avatar

I was all ready to congratulate you. Well, I guess I still can, because anybody who can create a cool costume like that deserves congratulations. My sons are lucky I never attempted to make any of theirs. I’m already dreading trying to make my son’s face look like The Joker’s on Wednesday, since that is his chosen costume. Let’s hope my hand is steady when I’m applying that makeup…

    1. The Waiting's avatar

If he’s going as the Heath Ledger Joker, then it should be pretty easy. Just smear it all around. If he’s going as the Jack Nicholson Joker, that will definitely be more difficult.

      1. Carrie's avatar

Haha–good point! I’ll definitely go for the Heath Ledger Joker.

  23. liquorstorebear's avatar

LOVE that costume. It’s helping me get over my fear of owls.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Yeah, she’s pretty much the opposite of scary. Except at 3AM and she’s screaming.

  24. The Don BroJo's avatar

“Feel free to pin the crap out of this post!”…..is this you trying to get someone else to change the diaper?

    1. The Waiting's avatar

You are extremely perceptive, BroJo. So can I put you down for a shift?

      1. The Don BroJo's avatar

        I’ll be right over.

  25. RFL's avatar

Adorable costume, and yes you totally had me set up for a different announcement!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

      I’m kind of horrible, aren’t I? ;)

  26. Shoes's avatar

Homemade costumes are the best! Great job and what a willing and cute model you have there in Wee Cee.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I know! She did a really good job posing for these pics! Come to find out that there was a pile of dog poop right under the blanket where she was sitting. Halloween photo shoot fail.

  27. rachelocal's avatar

Nicely done! On both counts–the twist and the costume. She looks like a very smart little owl.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks! She’s been making a funny little “hooooo” sound lately so hopefully she’ll do it on Halloween when she’s wearing her costume.

  28. MissFourEyes's avatar

That is the cutest owl EVER!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

      Thanks M4E! She’s sorta adorable ;)

  29. A Gripping Life's avatar

Oh. Em. Gee. Miss C is killing me with her cuteness. I’m dying, here. She is one gorgeous owl. That costume is AMAZING!!! Now you’ve set a precedent, Emily. Next year, I fear you’ll feel the need to create something equally as clever or better than this owl – which of course would be impossible. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I’m up for the challenge! I found a really adorable owl costume for babies from Pottery Barn Kids but it was like $65 and I couldn’t possible rationalize paying that, so I just made this one. It took awhile, but believe it or not it wasn’t too hard. I hope she chooses a really difficult one next year because I think I can duplicate it! Thanks, Lisa!

Two words that changed my life: fabric glue. It is amazing. Thanks, Audra!

OH MY GOODNESS, how adorable! pinning for sure

Thanks, lady! I am slowing becoming obsessed with Pinterest, so look out for flying pigs and the Four Horsemen.

  35. midwesterngirlforever's avatar

Very sweet. Creative costumes are the best.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

They really are. Theyare so one-of-a-kind. Thanks, MidwesternGirl!

  36. speaker7's avatar

Color me impressed. I make costumes in such a fashion, people would believe a baby made them.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I literally started on this one in July so I could scrap it if it turned out bad. I got by OK this time. This time.

  37. dlaiden's avatar

Your daughter is adorable. And your excellence reminds me of the utter hopelessness of my sewing skills: God help my future children.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

It is all about the fabric glue. It makes things go so much faster and easier. That and coffee.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks! She is such a ham.

  38. Jen and Tonic's avatar

That is SUCH a good costume, color me impressed. Also, I was totally duped by this post!

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks, Jen! My ulterior motive for making this costume is to start my Pinterest takeover. If you can’t beat it, dominate it.

Since you offered: I pinned it! Otherwise I wouldn’t have done it. :P

Great job at the costume! Do you have your own sweatshop in your basement or did you make it yourself? :P

    1. The Waiting's avatar

Thanks, Daan! I tried to outsource the entire operation to India but then my husband scolded me for not utilizing the American labor force at hand (ie, myself).

      1. Dan0sz's avatar

Well, I’m sure you did as much a great job as any indian would. You could’ve saved a few pennies though! :P

  41. lazylauramaisey's avatar

I’m so glad your announcement was something of such magnitude. I thought it might be something trivial, like about marriages or babies or hurricanes. Or truffles. This is the best baby outfit ever. And that’s the kind of thing announcements SHOULd be about.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

I know, right? Baby Halloween costumes are about 1000 times more important than birth and marriage announcements.

  42. Maggie O'C's avatar

Just shut it!! That baby and that costume are ridonkulously cute! RE DONK! And you made it? Mothers like you make mothers like me hate ourselves. Darling!!! Just so cute! I like it.

    1. The Waiting's avatar

It’s all about the fabric glue. I am officially endorsing it.

      1. Maggie O'C's avatar

alright but I’m still a little bitter, glad my kids are teens so I don’t have a fabric glue incident before 5 p.m. tomorrow.

        1. The Waiting's avatar

Fabric Glue Incident sounds like an indie band.
